[Trailer] Steve Carrell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne Reflect On The Scars Of War In Last Flag Flying

- -

Ladies and Gentlemen, it looks like we have an Oscar contender on our hands. Coming from Amazon Studios is a trailer for the upcoming Last Flag Flying, a film from Richard Linklater (Boyhood, The Before Trilogy) that follows three Vietnam war veterans (Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne) as they embark on a trip to bury one of their own. Here’s the trailer along with a synopsis provided by the studio:

“In 2003, 30 years after they served together in the Vietnam War, former Navy Corps medic
Richard “Doc” Shepherd (Steve Carell) re-unites with ex-Marines Sal (Bryan Cranston)
and Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) on a different type of mission: to bury Doc’s son, a young
Marine killed in the Iraq War. Doc decides to forgo burial at Arlington Cemetery and, with the
help of his old buddies, takes the casket on a bittersweet trip up the East Coast to his home
in suburban New Hampshire. Along the way, Doc, Sal and Mueller reminisce and come to terms
with shared experiences of the war that continue to shape their lives. Director Richard Linklater
and author Darryl Ponicsan collaborated on the screenplay which follows the trio as they wrestle
with the pangs of war both past and present.”

This looks like a surefire Oscar contender arriving in that November sweet spot where it’s not too distant that voters forget about a film and not too late in the cycle that votes have already been cast. Coming from Richard Linklater as well, Last Flag Flying has (on paper) the proper pedigree for it to be a critical hit. If it does make it as a strong contender come February, this will mark the second year in a row where Amazon Studios has had a film represented at the Oscars coming off the heels of Manchester by the Sea which saw Casey Affleck and Kenneth Lonergan both take home statues.
