The city of Los Angeles will have another must visit attraction, after its City Council voted unanimously to approve a $1.5 billion Museum of Narrative Art, financed completely by director and producer George Lucas.

Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars franchise (which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year) and the Indiana Jones series amongst others, made the pitch to LA City Council for the construction of the museum next to his former school the University of Southern California. With the Council’s approval groundbreaking is expected to take place later this year, with an estimated completion date of 2021. The cost will be completely covered by Lucas.

He says the museum will focus on the entire scope of the history of narrative art, from cave painting up until the modern age of digital film. But there will be plenty of film related material that will attract the thousands of tourists that flock to Hollywood every year.

Don Bacigalupi, a museum spokesperson said there will be many exhibits focusing on the production of many famous films.

“There’s going to be storyboards, costumes, props and other elements from such films like Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz, and of course Star Wars. Everything from Luke’s Lightsaber to Darth Vader’s costume and helmet.”

There will also be numerous interactive programs for adults and children alike, as well as film students and other academic professionals.

George Lucas has donated millions of dollars over the years to his alma mater USC, and the complete funding of this museum will be the largest private gift in the history of the City of Los Angeles and the state of California.
