Joss Whedon, the man behind comic con favorites Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and of course, Marvel’s Avengers has returned to direct, write and produce an upcoming adaptation of Batgirl for Warner Brothers as DC Comics continues to expand it’s cinematic universe (collectively known as the DCEU).
Barbara Gordon debuted as Batgirl in 1967 and has enjoyed success in many different runs over the years fighting alongside Batman while also branching out to join groups like the all-female Birds of Prey and the Justice League.
This would, of course, mark a dramatic shift for Whedon as he jumps from Marvel to their direct competitor DC Comics. It is unknown when the film would be released or who will play the titular role but fans have to feel reassured with this news as Whedon is a veteran of the comic book industry with a stellar track record.
Visibly burnt out by the prospect of a third Avengers film, it remains to be seen how active Whedon would be in the formation of the rest of the Universe but for with rumors of a Birds of Prey film and a Nightwing film on its way, Batgirl’s superhero affiliations seem to be moving forward with no end in sight.
Regardless it seems that DC has secured another talented director to their stable that also includes Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and Matt Reeves (The Batman). Hopefully, the upcoming Wonder Woman and Justice League films are the beginning of a turnaround for a cinematic universe that has underperformed critically thus far.
